Mayor in fight for jobcentre

Friday, August 08, 2008, 00:00

THE Mayor of Retford has hit out at proposals which could see Retford's Jobcentre Plus close.

Wendy Quigley said she wants the proposal to close the centre on Grove Street to be reversed.

She said she was 'dismayed' after hearing of the proposals to close the Grove Street centre.

The centre is currently coming to the end of a six week consultation into its future.

In a letter to Jobcentre Plus in Nottingham, Mrs Quigley says: "Retford is a Town of over 20,000 people and the centre of services for the whole of the east of Bassetlaw's rural community.

"The ward I represent has some areas with high levels of unemployment and worklessness and public transport is not good especially in the rural communities served by the Town."

She adds: "To expect residents in Retford and the surrounding villages to travel to Worksop adding another 19 miles round trip to their journey is unacceptable and in many cases it could involve considerable travel times making it difficult to 'sign on' or attend for interview."

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), which runs Jobcentres, says it has not yet decided on any closure.

The consultation into the proposed closure ends later this month.
