Village phone boxes face axe

Thursday, June 19, 2008, 00:00

THE familiar sight of a red telephone box in Bassetlaw villages could soon become a thing of the past. British Telecom (BT) says many of the country's red telephone boxes are unprofitable and plans to axe dozens of them in the district.

The company wants to axe 150 across Notts including many in Bassetlaw .

The closures include phone boxes at Sturton Road, South Wheatley; Station Road, Misterton; Darlton; Town Street, Treswell and Top Street, East Drayton.

The phone box outside the village hall in Cottam and those at Smeath Lane, Hayton; Highfield, Hallcroft; Great North Rd, Barnby Moor; Sutton Lane, Sutton; Old London Road, West Drayton and Lincoln Road, Tuxford could also shut.

A BT spokesman explained the reasons behind the proposed closures.

"Payphone use has halved in the last year calls are still declining at 20 per cent per year," she said.

"Almost 60 per cent of our payphones are unprofitable, with almost 6,000 phones making less than one call a month."

Objectors to the proposed closure of a specific phone box can write to the planning department of their local authority.
