Alternative route due to roadworks

MOTORISTS in Retford are being advised of road closures along Albert Road as resurfacing work is carried out.

The work will see the road closed from Monday, February 15, from the A638 London Road to Duke Street, leaving drivers facing a detour that takes them through the busiest roads of Retford.

For those who live and work nearby, though, the detour is the last thing on their mind – many are either worried by other issues on their street, or simply relieved the work is being carried out.

Albert Road resident Michael Donoghue said the work could not have come soon enough, after damaging his car towards the end of last year.

"I hit a pothole outside in Albert Street and put a large dent on my wheel," he said.

"It was about three months ago and they've filled the pothole in, but the road needs doing."

Retford tradesman Darren Preston, of D Preston Roofing, often travels through Albert Road for his work and believes Albert Road is not the only one in need of resurfacing.

He said: "There's a lot of them in Retford that need doing.

"I do a lot of work down these streets, but the new route won't be an issue for me."

Carolyn Jakes, of Spicer's Court, the bigger issues in the area are parking and lighting.

"If you park anywhere on Albert Road, you get into trouble," she said.

"We want streetlights up here as well - the ones outside our homes don't work.

"It's more important to us than the resurfacing."

In the meantime, motorists who would have travelled west along Albert Road are asked to travel via Arlington Way, continuing onto Amcott Way, Hospital Road, Queen Street and Victoria Road.

Those travelling east are asked to travel in the opposite direction along the same route during the work, which finishes on Sunday, March 7.
