Change to bin collections

PLANS to introduce fortnightly black bin collections have been announced by West Lindsey District Council.

The Gainsborough-based authority is planning to introduce a 'triple-bin' scheme for most of its 39,000 households to replace the weekly general domestic waste rounds.

It would alternate the black bin general rubbish destined for landfill with both blue and green recycling bins on a fortnightly basis.

And it would mean that, similar to collections in East Lindsey, Boston borough and North Kesteven council areas, the general 'residual' waste for landfill would only take place every 14 days.

Recycling officer Steve Leary said 225 local authorities had already adopted the triple-bin system.

"It's not a money-saving scheme because the free green bins instead of households paying £25 for them will cost £450,000," said Mr Leary.

He added that there was plenty of evidence from across the country to prove that fortnightly black bin collections had led to increases in recycled rubbish.
