Huge crowds honour war heroes at Veteran's Day celebration

Huge crowds honour heroes
There was a good turn out for the Veteran's Day tea party at Goodwin Hall.

A VETERAN'S Day at Goodwin Hall which saw an attendance in the hundreds has raised £250 for national soldier's charity Help For Heroes.

The event on Saturday afternoon saw more than 300 people arrive to socialise, dine and raise funds for the charity.

Money raised was presented to Help For Heroes representative Major Tony Eaton.

Bassetlaw MP John Mann, who organised the event, said he hoped the popular event would be hosted every year.

"It was hugely proper to recognise the veterans of Bassetlaw," he said.

"They turned out in huge numbers and we should always be doing this.

"It's the least I can do as an MP for the veterans and we always look forward to it."

Retford Mayor Ian Campbell, who also attended Saturday's celebrations, added that veterans looked forward to catching up with their peers on the day.

"A lot of the veterans commented on how little they see other ex-servicemen throughout the year," he said.

"They got the chance to reminisce, but we also had young servicemen going out there and it was good to get their point of view as well."

Veteran's Day was held as part of Armed Forces Day, a national celebration recognising work put in by the troops with various events organised across the country.
