Sports club project hangs in balance

JUNIOR footballers looking forward to a massive makeover of their facilities might see the project saved.

The latest phase of a council's ongoing commitment to the stricken Marshall's sports and social club is under threat.

Dozens of children were expecting the £890,000 improvement package to the sports field off Middlefield Lane to go ahead.

But West Lindsey District Council – which came to the rescue after the private club went bust – has had to take a step backwards because of its own cash commitments.

And its planned £500,000 contribution towards the project, which would include creating new changing facilities, has had to be withdrawn.

But national sports charity the Football Foundation may yet step in.

The authority has been given the impression that another outside body could still come up with 60 per cent of the cost.

The balance could be met by the Football Foundation if the main capital outlay can be guaranteed.

So the charity's offer will remain on the table until this possible solution can be explored.
