A Sean Cann goal was not enough for Lincoln United as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Goole last night.

The home side opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the UniBond League Division One (South) clash.

Vill Powell was played in behind the Whites' defence and was able to slot past Mario Ziccardi, despite the goalkeeper's best efforts.

The Whites' first chance came in the ninth minute. Sean Cann held up the ball in the middle of the park and played in Jonty Hawley down the right but his low cross was parried away to safety by goalkeeper Craig Parry.

There were appeals for a penalty in the 11th minute when Matt O'Halloran was brought down in the area but Goole ignored these shouts and counter-attacked.

However, Steve Melton had tracked back and blocked an effort from goalscorer Powell.

United could have been on level terms on the half-hour mark but Ben Garrick dragged his shot wide.

However, the home side doubled their lead when Glyn Cotton ran across the United box and fired into the bottom right-hand corner on 43 minutes.

Garrick was then substituted, having picked up an injury, two minutes into first-half added time.

In the 66th minute United showed good build-up play but Chris Funnell was only able to screw his shot wide at the end of the move.

United came close again two minutes later. O'Halloran delivered a right-footed free-kick but Brendan McDaid could only direct his header over the bar.

Goole could have extended their lead in the 76th minute. Terry Barwick found himself in a one-on-one position but mis-timed his shot, which went for a throw.

In the 83rd minute United pulled a goal back. Funnell played in Cann down the right wing and, after the Goole defender and goalkeeper ran into each other, Cann scored from an acute angle off a post. But United could not force an equaliser.

WHITES: Ziccardi, Fleming, Porter (George 62), McDaid, Wilkins, Hawley, Garrick (Funnell 47), Melton, O'Halloran (Zuerner 80), Cann, Smith.
