Kesteven Colts 24

RETFORD entertained top of the table Kesteven in an eagerly awaited contest and the match certainly lived up to its billing.

Retford were much changed after last week's close encounter with Lincoln and they seemed to make an instant impact as the recalled Luke Borton converted two early penalties as Retford started the brighter.

However, the League leaders began to find some form midway through the first half as they scored three tries in quick succession.

Retford responded as Ben Silcock made a darting run then Luke Borton came close with the try line at his mercy after a clever break from Mike Phillips.

This Retford pressure was greeted by the half time whistle.

After a half time chat with the management team Retford came out of the traps and pressured Kesteven and made them look like an ordinary side.

With this pressure Keelan Ward was allowed to gather the ball and score under the posts and Borton converted.

Kesteven then scored a fortuitous try which was against the run of play.

Retford were undeterred and muscle man Jamie Braes scored as he took four forwards with him as he powered for the line, much to the delight of the Chief Sponsor; Borton again converted.

This set the game up for a grandstand finish as Retford really piled on the pressure and came close to snatching the game as superb quick hands from the Retford backs sent Jamie Braes away who was hauled down agonisingly short of the line.

These were the final actions of the game and the full time was met by a huge cheer from the Kesteven players, who knew they had been taken so close and arguably been given their toughest game of the season.

Man of the Match was given to Liam Street who was monumental in the scrum and Donkey was given to Danny Cribbis for his distinct lack of pace.
