Retford end on top of derby clash

Tuesday, August 12, 2008, 15:42

An Early batting collapse left Bridon to fight a rearguard action to avoid derby day defeat by Retford who enjoyed much the better of the contest.

Following the washed-out early fixture at Retford, the second of the first team's derby clashes was played on a bright, breezy day on a wicket offering pace with a food carry to the wicketkeepers.

Retford were asked to bat first but made a shaky start with Nigel Hall falling cheaply to a slip catch by Tim Muir off Wayne Spooner with the total on 12.

The talented Chandra Kumara joined Paul Singleton and the pair safely overcame the new ball to build an invaluable second wicket partnership of 70.

Tim Muir broke the stand by having Singleton well taken by Stuart Goodall on a leg side boundary for 22.

Pascal Broadley immediately made his intentions clear with some sharply run singles and with Kumara playing fluently, the pair built another good partnership.

The latter duly completed a well compiled half century with a pull for four off Simon Davison and the Bridon attack were under pressure to stem the flow of runs.

They took the total to 154 with eight overs remaining before Davison trapped Kumara leg before for a fine 69.

Former Bridon stalwart Darren Spooner joined Broadley with the obvious need for a late run chase.

After scoring just six, Spooner fell to a catch behind by the reliable Will Lee again off Davison, leaving the score on 183 for 4 wickets.

Broadley was playing very comfortably and scoring all round the wicket.

The skipper John Musgrove and Broadley again built another fine partnership putting on 28 unbeaten runs as the innings closed at 211 for the loss of 4 wickets, with Broadley 66 not out.

For Bridon, Davison bowled well, collecting two wickets while the fielding was tidy throughout the afternoon.

The Bridon reply began disastrously with Lee caught at first slip by a juggling effort by Bates off Kumara without a run on the board.

Rob Mcleod joined Spooner and the pair took the total to 11 before the former got a leading edge to a Broadley delivery , to be caught at mid-on by Singleton.

The home side were plunged into further problems with the total on 19 as Spooner's intended off drive ended in the keeper's gloves.

With Retford well on top, Muir joined David Fagan but with the total on 26 the latter mistimed an on drive and holed out to Jon Cooke at mid-on, again off the bowling of Broadley.

With just one run added to the total, Wayne Ellis edged a delivery from Kumara to Bates at slip and half the side were back in the pavilion with just 27 on the board and 38 overs remaining.

Muir remained calm throughout this period and showed his class and determination with some fine shots.

However, with the total on 46, Muir was caught and bowled by Broadley after scoring a fine 21.

Stuart Goodall and Stuart Parkin came together with 29 overs remaining but refused to be fazed by the situation.

Parkin dominated a fighting partnership, timing the ball impressively and reaching a fine half century.

The pair put on 92 off 17 overs before Goodall's intended hook off Sam Shepherd finished in Chris Bower's safe hands at fine leg.

Goodall played well for his 32 and Davison joined Parkin with 12 overs remaining.

Unfortunately for the home side, Parkin fell to a catch in the deep by Spooner off Kumara for a superb 69 containing one six and eight fours.

With 6.3 overs remaining Matt Makings joined Davison and the total was 152 for the loss of eight wickets.

The pair played comfortably to deny Retford any further success, and at the completion of the overs, Bridon finished on 176 for the loss of eight wickets.

Retford fully deserved their 17 points while Bridon could feel reasonably pleased that fine displays from Goodall and Parkin rescued a dire situation.
